Camp Kesem is a national non-profit organizaiton, driven by passionate college student leaders, supporting children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. We provide a free, week-long summer camp to these children, along with reunions and other activities throughout the year to sustain the support network. It's an opportunity for campers to build self-esteem and gain support from peers facing similar challenges. But most of all, the kids who come to Camp Kesem SLU are there to have fun – and that’s what the week is all about!

Camp Kesem was brought to SLU in the Fall of 2013 by four friends and myself. The coordinator positions were divided among us, and I was named the coordinator for PR/ Marketing.

I held this position for two years (Fall 2013 - Fall 2015). As the PR/ Marketing coordinator, it was my job to create and maintain a website, post regularly for social media, create flyers and advertisements for fundraisers and events on campus, and reach out to local news outlets by sending press releases.

We have had tremendous growth over the years.

Year One (Summer 2014): 27 campers and 22 student volunteers

Year Two (Summer 2015): 38 campers and 27 student volunteers

Year Three (Summer 2016): 70 campers and 45 student volunteers

3 of the founders of Camp Kesem SLU and I.

My current coordinator role is Operations. It is my job to find a campsite, come up with the camp schedule, and retrieve the necessary supplies for a succesful camp.

When Camp Kesem SLU first began, all we were given was a domain and a template to follow. Since then, the website has been a way for camper families and others interested in Camp Kesem to be informed, entertained, and to stay excited for the upcoming year of camp. I controlled the website from 2013-2015. This year, another member has taken over, and the website is no longer in my job position.

My job for the website was to keep the pages up to date, add new pages when necessary, create header images, and post for the the blog. The different pages on the website allow for easy access to information, applications, and contacts.

While I was the PR/Marketing Coordinator, Camp Kesem SLU was regularly active on Facebok and Twitter. After creating the accounts they now have over 500 likes on Facebook and 300 followers on Twitter. I posted at least 4 or 5 times a week between the two combined. Posts varied from information on an upcoming fundraiser to wishing one of our campers a happy birthday. I posted in a way that enticed the audience to click on the link that may be attached or interact with the post by commenting, replying, sharing, or retweeting it.

By using Photoshop, I created all kinds of flyers for events that Camp Kesem SLU hosts throughout the year. We have fundraisers, information sessions, trainings, and camp visits. Whenever the word needed to get out to the student body, I created a flyer.

Every two months, Camp Kesem SLU sends out a newsletter (3-4 pages long) to all camper families, donors, and counselors. It was my job to create the newsletter. I gathered the information, created it, and sent it out to familes.

Press releases are the most important part of the PR/ Marketing coordinator's job. The way Camp Kesem gets their name out to the world is through news articles, online videos, and blogs. It is my job to get Camp Kesem SLU published in the news. I had been able to do this on multiple occasions.
